Exams
First years are back in class this week and are relieved to have their Christmas exams over them The rest of the school will have exams Friday 18th, Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd of December. Still time to get some study in.

GAA
St. Mel’s Senior team took on a highly rated Summerhill in a challenge match in a cold, windy Emmet Park, Killoe on Wednesday 2nd of December. The Summerhill forwards causes problems but the Mel’s rear guard had strong throughout. Aaron Madden and Mark Hughes were on top form registering 4 – 7 between them. St. Mel’s ran out convincing winners in the end.
On Thursday last in the Leinster Senior A Colleges Championship St. Mel’s started the brightest with two early points from Darren Quinn. However, they then suffered a major setback conceding an early goal against the run of play. St. Mel’s were given an opportunity to regain the lead with a penalty only to be prevented by a magnificent save from the Dundalk keeper. A fine spell followed for St. Mel’s which yielded two goals one, which was set up by a magnificent dummy form midfielder Michael Farrell. Dundalk stayed in the game with two gaols in succession, but St. Mel's kept their lead, going in leading by 3 points at half time. 2 – 07 to 3 –01 Dundalk ht back with a goal immediately after the restart. Although St. Mel's owned the ball for the majority of the 2nd half, Dundalk kept their lead with points at vital times. A late goal from Dundalk seemed to have settled the tie but a late comeback from Mel’s was in vain as Dundalk ran out 1 point winners 5 – 06 to 2 - 14
The U16 team put in a gallant effort on Friday 4th when they played St. Mary's, Mullingar. A great performance was put in all on the St. Mel’s team. The teams were neck and neck all the way through the game except for one five minute period in which St. Mary’s scored 3 points. This ended up being the difference between the two 2 teams. Final Score 0-11 to 0- 8 
Soccer
U – 14 Soccer
The U – 14 soccer team had two good wins in the last few weeks. The first victory was over Birr with St. Mels’s coming out 3 –0 victors in a hard fought match at the Mall. Moyne C.S. Were the next visitors and a Naill Kelly first half hat trick saw St. Mel’s ease to a 7 – 1 victory. Other players to stand out over the two games were A. Smith, S. Donnelly and S. Mc Ardle. Our next game is against Moate.
Basketball
St. Mel’s U 19 started off by an interception by Kealan Mc Nevin leading to a basket from him. Then a quick 3 pointer by Captain Mc Nevin go the rest of the lads pumped up and that quickly followed by a basket from Lee Shields and Mc Nevin. The 1st quarter ended with Mel’s in the lead.
Lee Shields got off to a great start in the 2nd quarter with two 3 pointers but the Marist, Athlone had a few baskets to get them back into the game.
Mel’s started to pull away in the 3rd quarter with Gerard Sheehan scoring a few baskets and Lee Shields, Colm Farrell had two 3 pointers and strong defence by the team had Mel’s go into the 4th quarter with an 11 point lead.
The 4th quarter started with Mel’s pushing the lead to 19 points. Lee Shields was fouled out of the game with 4 minutes to go. But Mel’s started to show class with around the back passes by Colm Farrell, a 3 pointer and a Fadaway jumpshot by Kealan Mc Nevin allowed for coach Mick Murphy to bring in all players from the bench. The game ended 52 – 40
Top scores were: Lee Shields 16, Kealan Mc Nevin 15, Gerard Sheehan 12, Colm Farrell 12.
The under 16 Basketball team played Killcok on the 9th of December. The game started off with Killcock going up by 10 points. Mel’s got off to a disaster of a start. The 1st quarter ended 26 – 10.
Strong performances by Geard Sheehan and Marko Mickalo on defence and good outside shooting from Pat Kelly, Colm Farrell and Sean Hackett saw the 1st half end 36 – 29.
Mick Murphy inspirational speech got the whole team pumped for a superior comeback, fine lay ups by Mantas Budginas and strong rebounds from Brian Walsh left Mel’s trailing by a point at the end of the 3rd quarters.
A fantastic team effort and never give up attitude saw Mel’s score 17 points Killcock only score 4 points n the 4th quarter. The game ended 59 – 50. The victors St. Mel’s were delighted.
Carol Service
A Christmas Carol Service will be held in the school on the 17th December. The CD classes are busy practising for what will be a enjoyable morning for the whole school.
