The U 16s took on Athlone Community College last week and won by an impressive 9 points with a final score of 2-13 to 2-4. Unfortunately the U14 team were beaten on Friday 6th in the first round of the North Leinster Cup with a score of 1-10 to 3-15.

Basketball

On Monday 26th of October. St. Mel’s U16 basketball team traveled to Athlone to play Marist College. The Mel's side outmatched the small Marist team in both size and skill. The score at the end of the first two quarters was 42-2 in favour of Mel's. The Mel's team had a more relaxed attitude towards the second half and became a bit lazy on the defensive end allowing baskets by Marist that could otherwise have been avoided, but at that stage there was no hope of a comeback from Marist. The final score was 76-21 to Mel's. Top scorer for Mel's was Andrew Kelly. (21 points) The return match was played on 4th of November, with St. Mel's coming out victorious again with a score of 72-14. Excellent play from everyone on the panel is appreciated.
St. Mel’s U19’s defeated Marist college of Athlone by a score line of 20 points which gave them there first league victory of the season. Colm Farrell was the top scorer on the day. Well done.
Sadly, Tuesday 10th November St. Mel’s U19 squad lost to the Naas U19s by 10 points in quite a poor game.

Rugby

On the 21st of October St Mel’s Senior rugby team played Moyne in the second round of the cup. This took place in Longford rugby club. The score was 7-14 to Moyne. This means Mel’s will be playing in the Shield after this loss. The Mel’s team put in a good performance and there was great rugby on the two sides and there was also a great individual performance from the two sides including Joe McGowan for St. Mel’s. Thanks to Mr. Steve Coy for his help with the team. The senior match this week was cancelled and will be played today, Wednesday the 18th.

Law and order

On Thursday 5th November, the TY Students in St. Mel’s spent the day participating in a law course. Barrister John Fahy came down from Galway to give the TY an insight into the legal system. A mock court Trial was organised and acted out by the Students with Mr. Fahy as the judge. Everyone thought the day was very enjoyable and The TY’s would like to thank Mr. John Fahy for this wonderful experience.

Sympathy

Deepest of sympathies to Mr. Rowley; who lost his mother last week. The entire staff and students would like to extend their sincere sympathy to Mr.Rowley and the Rowley family.
